Technical improvements to the game engine allowed for more than 35fps on the Medium preset at full-HD 1080p resolution on my PC, which has an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a Radeon RX570 GPU. More importantly, the game looks gorgeous even on low graphics settings. A Plague Tale: The Requiem doesn’t lose its visual appeal if you choose to go for a better frame rate. She is the power of unwavering determination and will go to any extent for the health of her brother. Her moments of indiscriminate anger – exceptionally voice-acted by Charlotte McBurney – are jaw-dropping.

Over the course of my game, I was forced to adopt a passive approach, so I can’t inadvertently contribute to his psychological downfall – not that it really affected the game’s narrative. Still, I felt so emotionally attached to Amisia that I wanted to keep her from turning into a mindless killer.

A Plague Tale: Amicia is not alone on this journey through Requiem. Other characters lend a helping hand. Hugo, his younger brother, is as lovable as ever, but risks increasing the grip of the mysterious macula, which allows him to control the rat swarm and protect his sister when she becomes incapacitated. I was not prepared for the horrors of the apocalypse brought on by these rats, which would undoubtedly fuel my nightmares in the future.

Amicia isn’t completely helpless against rats – or the other human enemies it encounters in this journey. Yes, A Plague’s Tale: Requiem focuses on stealth and survival, but it also gives you a decent arsenal to ward off enemies. Starting with just a rock and a sling, Amicia will acquire knives, pot bombs and a crossbow as the game progresses. She can also craft various alchemy mixes, which can be used to modify the effects of her weapons and tackle environmental puzzles. These mounting options keep enemy combats from going stale. The puzzles are also challenging enough to give you a sense of accomplishment, but not so hard that you have to scour online forums looking for solutions.

In keeping with the attention to detail that I noticed throughout its play, A Plague Tale: Requiem is the lone animation for Amicia’s takedowns and counters. (Meanwhile, Amisia’s trembling breaths become more and more audible as an unsuspecting enemy draws closer.) Initially, I suspected it could make enemy encounters mundane after a few hours. But thanks to the constant influx of new weapons, abilities, and allies, no level felt like there was always room to test alternative methods.

As you level up, you’ll be able to unlock new skills, but character progression doesn’t reward you with skill points that you can use to unlock the abilities you want. Instead, depending on the path you take—stealth, attack, or alchemy—you’ll only unlock new abilities in that skill tree. A Plague Tale: Requiem takes an interesting approach to progression that I found refreshing.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is one of those rare gems that comes when a developer refrains from spoiling a great game with AAA FULL. There are no micro transactions anywhere. What we get is a game with a tightly woven narrative, captivating visuals and characters that leave a lasting impression on your heart.

Amicia’s despair and resulting anger as she seeks a cure for the terrible disease plaguing her brother Hugo are chilling to the bone. The exquisitely written characters of A Plague Tale: Expectations become even more endearing thanks to excellent voice acting. The rich graphics and equally attractive background scores further enhance the experience.

Character progression is fast enough, and the gradual introduction of new allies on your journey keeps the gameplay of A Plague Tale: Requiem from always getting stale. Its level design also encourages you to try different approaches as new tools become available for Amicia.

Ultimately, A Plague Tale: Requiem is one of the best single-player campaigns I’ve played recently.
