A shaky ship and no captain

The Gandhi family has opened another war front in Punjab, while the Congress struggles to capture other states

NS Unnecessary coup of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh The Gandhi brothers and sisters in Punjab had a minded idea. Mr Singh – a war veteran, a descendant of the Patiala royal family, and the Congress war horse who led the party to victory – was discredited by the Congress high command despite being credited with stopping the Bharatiya Janata Party’s saffron wave in Punjab. done. (BJP) which shook the country after Narendra Modi came to power at the Centre.

The dismissal of Mr. Singh was a supreme irony. The legitimately elected leader was ousted by the Congress high command, which included the party’s interim ad hoc chairperson Sonia Gandhi; Rahul Gandhi, who abruptly resigned from the presidency without implementing any succession plan, but continued to intervene genuinely and at will; and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been fluttering in wings for a long time but has been anointed as in-charge in Uttar Pradesh to oversee the elections.

a stupid idea

A good leader who is secure and does not crave praise will not encourage the discontent that destabilizes his own state government. It is well known that Mr. Singh is not given to fishing and has a mind of his own.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, on the other hand, his biggest critic, is temperamental and unpredictable. He quit the BJP and toyed with the idea of joining the Aam Aadmi Party. He joined the Congress just before the last election and became a minister under pressure from the high command. He had to step down shortly thereafter, as he openly and frequently crossed swords with the Capt. It was a foolish idea of the Gandhi family to appoint Mr. Sidhu as the Congress President of Punjab and free him to weaken Mr. Singh because of his independence streak.

This is not an attempt to give Mr. Singh a clean chit on his governance record. He had many faults and made many enemies. He may be incompetent as an administrator, he may fail to deliver on the party’s election promises, and he may be inaccessible to his legislators by his brutal methods, but the Congress high command has tried to weaken him. The method adopted for this was mindless and self-harm. Mr. Singh’s performance should have been reviewed fairly and diligently. The grievances of his colleagues could be conveyed to him with confidence. He could have been warned of stern action if he did not change his ways. Proper procedure should have been followed to remove him. He should be treated with dignity and grace, considering his age, stature, long service in Congress and the prestigious chair he occupied.

The Gandhi high command is no different from other high commands. No party in India, whether national or regional, has an internal party democracy. They are all controlled by one person or one family. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Difference is a crime the Kings do not forgive.” This is the curse of Indian democracy.

still looking for their feet

But Mr. Gandhi and Ms. Vadra would be confused to compare themselves with Mr. Modi or Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress or K Chandrashekhar Rao of Telangana Rashtra Samithi or MK Stalin of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Others are undisputed leaders of their parties while the Gandhi siblings are yet to find their feet; They are not well fabricated and shaped in the furnace of politics. He lacks the tenacity and patience of other party supremos. They forget that their authority does not work in the party. 23 senior Congress leaders have openly challenged him. Many Congress leaders have switched to BJP. The party is facing crisis in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. It is in crisis in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. This was not the right time to drag Mr Singh into battle, especially since he has a huge following among the Sikhs. He announced that he would keep his political options open and met the Union Home Minister on Wednesday. Sidhu Gatha is a prophetic story. Mr Singh’s description of him as “unstable” has been proven correct and was imagined by many. The unstable president resigned from his post after wreaking havoc.

The best politicians and generals choose their battles wisely. But the Gandhi family has waged another war with the formidable Mr. Singh in Punjab, when his party has a weak hold on other states and is in danger of disintegrating. A sure victory in the assembly elections in Punjab, where the BJP is weak and the Akali Dal in disarray, is now a definite defeat for the Congress. May wisdom rise in the Gandhi family to save the Grand Old Party from extinction. India now more than ever needs a strong and vibrant opposition modeled after Jawaharlal Nehru rather than Indira Gandhi.
