One of the much-awaited Indian films of 2023, Adipurush, whose first teaser was released here on Sunday, unites the talents of Prabhas (of the Baahubali franchise) and Om Raut, who directed the Ajay Devgn-starrer Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. was. Biggest Indian box office hit of 2020, reports Variety. Raut is depicted on Ramayana by Adi Purush Valmiki. The film is set 7,000 years ago and Prabhas’ character in the film is not called Lord Rama, he is Raghav, another name for Rama.
Sita, played by Kriti Sanonis called Janaki (as the daughter of King Janak), while Saif Ali KhanRavana is Lankesh (lord of Lanka), who is also a derivative of his ‘Ramayana’ names, notes Variety. Adipurush literally means ‘the first man’, but here the interpretation is of ‘the best man’.
After Tanhaji, Raut could have called any Indian A-lister for his next film but he chose Prabhas. “When I was writing Raghav’s character I always had Prabhas in my mind – it became so compelling for me,” Raut told Variety. “If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have made the film.”
Raut made it to Hyderabad from Mumbai in the middle of India’s first Covid-19 lockdown to discuss the film in person with Prabhas. The actor described the meeting as a “super exciting day”.
“After three days, I got a little tense because I thought it was the most precious film for the country – can I do it?” Prabhas told ‘Variety’. “Om said don’t worry and so it was a beautiful thing. I think it is the most iconic film of my life.”
Prabhas says he signed on because of Raut’s interesting script and how it integrates India’s history and culture. Prabhas said, “The way he designed the film was amazing, huge. And I think he made it very well.”
