AAP extends ‘in principle’ support to Uniform Civil Code

Amid the renewed discussions around the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have extended their support to the idea of UCC. AAP leader Sandeep Pathak affirmed that “in principle” the AAP stands with UCC, but it must be implemented after wider consultation with everyone.

“In principle, we support Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as Article 44 also says that there should be UCC in the country. However, it should be implemented after wider consultation with everyone. We feel that there should be wide consultation with all religions, political parties, and organizations and a consensus should be built,” AAP national general secretary Sandeep Pathak told news agency PTI.

The stand of the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP on the issue of UCC is different from the response of other political parties with Congress claiming it was a move by the BJP to divert the attention from more pressing issues like violence in Manipur.

The support of the AAP on the issue of UCC came even as the party disagrees with BJP on almost everything and is currently lobbying with other opposition parties to defeat the ordinance introduced by the BJP-led Central government for the administration of Union Territory of Delhi.

PM Modi’s fresh push for UCC

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made a strong push for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and stressed that the Constitution of India guarantees equal rights to all citizens. PM Modi emphasised how can a family function with different rules for everyone.

“Will a family function if there are two different sets of rules for people? Then how will a country run? Our Constitution too guarantees equal rights to all people,” PM Modi said while addressing BJP’s booth-level workers in Bhopal on Tuesday.

Comparison between family and nation in flawed: Congress

Congress responded to the family question of PM Modi with senior leader P Chidambaram claiming that the comparison between a family and a nation is flawed. “A family is knit together by blood relationships. A nation is brought together by a Constitution which is a political-legal document. Even in a family, there is diversity. The Constitution of India recognised diversity and plurality among the people of India,” Chidambaram said.
