Aegean seas: 16 killed as refugee ship capsizes off Greek island – Times of India

ATHENS: At least 16 people, including an infant, were killed when a refugee boat sank near the city on Friday night. Aegean Sea Paros island, Greek media reported on Saturday.
The Greek national news agency AMNA said the boat carrying the refugees and migrants capsized, with about 80 people on board at the time.
The Greek newspaper Ethnos (Nation) reported that a total of 63 passengers were rescued and evacuated to a safe place on the island.
It was the third tragedy in Greek waters within four days.
East, Greece‘s Hellenic Coast Guard announced that the death toll from the sinking of a refugee and migrant boat on the Aegean Sea island of Antikythera on Thursday has risen to 11, with 90 passengers rescued.
On Wednesday, Greek officials announced that a similar boat sank off the island of Folegandros, killing three people, and 13 others having been rescued and an unknown number of people missing.
Greece has been at the forefront of the influx of refugees and migrants since 2015. Hundreds of people have died in the Aegean Sea over the past six years.
So far this year, Greece has launched more than 1,450 search and rescue operations and rescued more than 29,000 people, Greek Maritime Affairs and Island Policy Minister Ioannis Plakiotakis said in an e-mailed press release on Saturday.
The minister said smugglers usually put dozens of people in distress on boats without life jackets that do not meet basic safety standards.
