The Afghanistan team has received Taliban nod to play the one-off Test against Australia in September, the war-torn country’s cricket board confirmed on Wednesday. This match is to be played in Hobart from 27 November.

Afghanistan will play the first Test match since the Taliban takeover earlier this month. Cricket Australia also claimed that the match was “going well”.

“It is goodwill between CA and the Afghanistan Cricket Board to conduct the match, which takes place immediately after the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE, in which the Afghanistan team is scheduled to play,” the spokesperson said.

“CA will continue to work with the Australian and Tasmanian governments before planning the arrival of the Afghanistan team later this year.”

The Taliban have said they will not interfere with the Afghan men’s national cricket team, the country’s biggest sporting success in recent years, although the fate of more modest women’s cricket programs remains unclear.

Australian broadcaster SBS reported on Tuesday that the Taliban would honor Afghanistan’s scheduled cricket matches, although a representative of the radical Islamist movement suggested the tour could depend on ties with other countries.

“In the future, we want good relations with all countries,” the broadcaster quoted Ahmadullah Wasik, deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, as saying.

“When good relations are established, the Afghan players can go to (Australia) and they can come here.”

No country has recognized the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan since the capture of Kabul on 14 August.
