United Nations: AfghanistanAmbassador of United Nations I withdrew from giving an address to world leaders General Assembly Later on Monday, a UN spokesman said.
Ghulam Isakzai, who represented President Ashraf Ghani’s regime, which was ousted last month, had reasons to defy Taliban With a speech but his name was removed from the list of speakers early Monday.
“The country withdraws its participation in the normal Discussion,” Monica Greeley, spokeswoman for the Speaker of the Assembly, confirmed to AFP.
He said Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations did not give any reason for the withdrawal.
The Taliban last week wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requesting that its new foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaki, be allowed to “participate”.
The letter stressed that Isakzai “no longer represents Afghanistan” at the global body.
The letter said the Taliban has named its Doha-based spokesman Suhail Shaheen as Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The note came after Guterres received a separate letter from Isakzai on 15 September, which listed Afghanistan’s delegation for the session.
Isakzai was listed as the Permanent Representative of Afghanistan in that letter.
The United Nations still regards Isakzai as the head of mission for Afghanistan.
“Only the mission can back down,” a UN official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The Afghan mission was not immediately available for comment.
The nine-member credentialing committee, including the United States, Russia and China, is to accede to the Taliban’s request, but it did not meet in time.
