After 27 Years of Hard Labor as a Migrant, Woman is Now Panchayat President in Karnataka’s Udupi District

After a drought hit them badly 27 years ago and unable to produce anything from two acres of land, Bhimavva and her husband Mariyappa moved from Katageri in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district to Talluru in Udupi district in search of work. Even as daily wage workers, after doing odd jobs to get their families back home, they can finally reap the benefits of all their hard work. Bhimavva is now the panchayat president of Talluru.

“I have struggled a lot to get my voter ID card, Aadhar card and other documents. I know how difficult it is to get my job done in a government office. Now that I have the power to turn things around, which was a surprise to me as well, I am trying my best to ensure that people get their work done easily and all facilities are distributed properly,” says Bhimava. Huh.

She is still a laborer in the second half of the day and visits the Panchayat office in the morning. “No one in the village waits for the President to accept his request. The work is going on at a fast pace at the gram panchayat level. Besides, she is still the old Bhimvva we all know, this presidency hasn’t changed her in the slightest,” said Shyamala, a resident of the village. I

The migrant couple has four children. Bhimvva’s eldest son is a deputed soldier on the Indo-China border. After working in different villages of Udupi district, the couple settled in Talluru and settled for some time a few years back.

Bhimava soon became a sought-after activist due to his honesty and hard work. In December 2020, when there was reservation for the post of Gram Panchayat President in the Scheduled Tribes category, she was working in the field of a village resident of Talluru. It was the owner of the farm, Karan, who suggested Bhimvva’s name and persuaded him to contest the election. While she agreed after much deliberation, she won by 162 votes.
