After IIT Bombay, NIT Calicut student allegedly commits suicide

A second year BTech student of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the hostel building on Wednesday, February 15. West Bengal.

The student’s body was found by his roommate, who immediately informed the college authorities. As per reports, the body has been shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, where the post-mortem will be conducted. The police have registered a case under unnatural death.

This comes after the news of three students committing suicide at IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. In IIT Madras, one student died by suicide and another attempted suicide but was rescued and is undergoing treatment at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital.

A few days back Darshan Solanki, a first year B.Tech (Chemical) student at IIT Bombay allegedly died after jumping from the seventh floor A hostel building at IIT’s Powai campus on February 12. His family members, living in the Maninagar area of ​​Ahmedabad city, claimed that he could not have taken his own life, having faced “discrimination for being a Dalit” through darshan.

However, the student’s family has alleged a conspiracy. He claimed that Darshan was “murdered”. “I firmly believe that my son was murdered. A few hours before his death, he called us, but he spoke normally and showed no signs that he was under any stress. However, when he came home during Makar Sankranti (in mid-January), he informed his aunt that other students were keeping distance from him. They were upset because Darshan had made so much progress (in education),” his mother Taralikaben Solanki told PTI.
