Agneepath protest: Arrested for ‘instigating’ agitators

a day after Opposition to Agneepath plan In the capital, Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a man for making provocative speeches and inciting protesters.

DCP (Dwarka) M Harsh Vardhan said the accused Surendra Sharma alias Fauji addressed a gathering of 50-60 agitators during a protest near the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) office in Baba Haridas Nagar.

According to Mr. Vardhan, around 10.45 am, 50-60 people came from Khaira towards Dhansa bus stand and gathered near the MCD office. They then started raising slogans calling for withdrawal of the new Agneepath scheme announced for recruiting soldiers in the defense services on a four-year contract basis.

The DCP said the protesters were taken to one side of the road so that traffic movement is not obstructed and then asked to disperse peacefully.

Later, Sharma, a resident of Asalatpur Khawad near Daulatpur, joined the protesters and started “instigating” them through his provocative speeches. He later got into a scuffle with the police personnel there, Mr. Vardhan said.

Indian Penalty under sections 186 (obstructing public servant from discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to prevent public servant from discharging his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant) FIR has been registered. A code was registered against Sharma.

On Friday, the police detained 18 protesters present at the spot and booked them as a precautionary measure.
