Ahead of Goa elections, lone NCP MLA merges party’s legislative wing with TMC

Ahead of the Goa Assembly polls, Churchill Alemao, the lone NCP MLA in the state, on Monday claimed that he has merged the party’s state legislative unit with the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. Alemao (72), who represents the state’s Benaulim assembly constituency, also told reporters that he would formally join the TMC in the presence of Mamata Banerjee, who is on a two-day visit to the coastal state.

The TMC has already said that it will contest all 40 seats in the state assembly elections to be held early next year. Alemao (72) on Monday met Speaker Rajesh Patnekar and informed him that he has merged the Goa legislative wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with the TMC. Why should I resign from the post of MLA? I am still an MLA. He told reporters after meeting Patnekar that I have merged the party’s legislative wing with TMC.

Alemao claimed that being the sole legislator of the NCP, he represents 100 per cent of the legislative wing of the party and hence, the merger is valid as per the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. More than two-thirds of the members may merge with the party’s legislative unit. Here, I am one hundred percent, he said.

Speaker Patnekar could not be reached for comments. When contacted, NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik said.
