Ahead of new session, UGC writes to colleges to strengthen anti-ragging measures

Ahead of the new session in colleges, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all colleges and universities to step up the anti-ragging mechanism. In the notification, the UGC has asked to take several precautionary measures ranging from setting up of anti-ragging cell to installation of CCTV cameras in the college premises.

The UGC has asked the colleges to constitute Anti Ragging Committee and Anti Ragging Squad, form Anti Ragging Cell and install CCTV cameras at all important points of the college. In addition, the UGC has asked colleges to organize anti-ragging workshops.

The UGC, in its recent notification, asked all colleges, “to conduct regular interaction and counseling sessions with students.” It asked the colleges to identify the causes of distress and mention anti-ragging warnings in the institute
E-prospectus and e-information booklets/brochures should be ensured.”

It further said, “Surprise inspection of hostels, students, accommodation, canteens, rest-cum-entertainment rooms, toilets, bus-stands should be done.
Out and anti-ragging posters should be displayed at all prominent places like admission centre, departments, library, canteen, hostel, common facilities etc.

Meanwhile, the UGC has also asked, “As per the University Grants Commission (UGC), the National Anti-Ragging Helpline should receive an online undertaking from both the student and the parent at the beginning of each academic year.

By requesting higher education institutions (HEIs) to include a mandatory clause in their admission forms, where students will have to list the reference number of the anti-ragging undertaking provided by them, the higher education regulator has linked this to admissions as well.
