Form of words:

Chennai: Main opposition AIADMK, which is facing a challenge from relaxed leader VK Sasikala, on Wednesday asked its byelaws to strengthen norms to retain the current leadership structure of the top two posts of O Panneerselvam and K Palaniswami. amended.

The amendment in the bye-laws at the AIADMK executive committee meeting here has closed doors for Sasikala, who claims to be the party’s general secretary.

While the amendments made in 2017 vested all the powers vested in the then newly created posts of party coordinator (Paneerselvam) and joint coordinator (Palaniswamy) with the top post of general secretary, the current changes further strengthen that top party structure.

The amendments mandate a ‘single vote’ by ‘primary members’ to elect the top leadership, which is the two positions of coordinator and joint coordinator.

While the posts are two, there cannot be separate votes, as the two positions together constitute the top leadership of the party.

According to AIADMK, Sasiyakala is not a member of the party though she has claimed to be the general secretary.

Senior leader D Jayakumar told reporters that only those who have been primary members for five years or more are eligible to vote to elect the party leadership.
