BHUBANESWAR: Department of Pathology with Laboratory Medicine AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received funding from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to set up satellite brain bank For the purpose of research on neuroscience.
The National Institute will set up this facility in its hospital in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. “This will be the first of its kind in the eastern region and will give a boost to research in neuroscience,” said the director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. “We are happy after getting the approval to set up this brain bank. Neuroscience is an important field and much work can be done in this area. We may store the brains of dead people and brain tissue of some patients after obtaining permission from the parents or guardians of patients or deceased persons. We will research that brain and its tissues,” Batmanbein said.
He said Suvendu Purkaito, Associate Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Department of Pathology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, will be the Chief Coordinator of the project. An amount of Rs 47.7 lakh has been sanctioned for the first year for the project. He said that this would help the institute to set up a brain bank.
Purkait said that the sanctioned period of the ICMR project is three years. Annual extension will be given after reviewing the work done on the project during the previous year. He said that after the project is over, the brain bank will be of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
“In Western countries, they have their own brain banks. After a person dies due to brain disease, specialists conduct molecular research in different parts of the brain to determine the cause of the disease. They also advise what other treatment can be given for betterment in future,” Purkait said.
It is a part of the National Task Force (ntf) Project titled, “Brain Bank Network India Initiative: Establishment of Satellite Brain Banks in India” neuroscience researchNIMHANS already has a brain bank.
