Air India starts restoring salaries at pre-pandemic level in a phased manner

According to a communication, Air India will restore the salary deducted in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic from September 1.

The loss-making airline, which was taken over by Tata in January this year, has also decided to revise the crew layover allowance and meal arrangements from September 1.

In a communication to employees, Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the airline will “restore the pay cuts of all employees with effect from September 1, 2022.”

While the airline has a lot to do to return to profitability, “sunsetting most of the COVID measures is an important and welcome milestone”, he said.

Earlier this year, Air India began restoring wages at pre-pandemic levels in a phased manner.

Queries sent to Air India remained unanswered.

The coronavirus pandemic had significantly affected the airline industry, and operators resorted to cost-cutting measures, including pay cuts, to manage their finances.

Tata took a loan of ₹15,300 crore from Air India and Air India Express Ltd, while the remaining ₹46,262 crore loan and about ₹15,000 crore for unpaid fuel bills were repaid by the government.
