Schools in Delhi will remain closed for physical classes till further orders while online classes and board exams will continue, the Directorate of Education (DOE) announced on November 21 in view of the prevailing air quality situation.

Officials in New Delhi said the air quality remained “very poor” on the morning of November 21. The city recorded its air quality index (AQI) as 382 at 9 am, the 24-hour average AQI was 374 on November 20.

“The Environment Department has directed the closure of all schools in NCR and adjoining areas with immediate effect till further orders of the Air Quality Management Commission. Hence, all government and private schools will remain closed till further orders,” said additional education director Rita Sharma.

“However, online teaching learning activities and examinations for board classes will be conducted as per the guidelines issued earlier,” the official said.

On November 13, the Delhi government had announced the closure of schools and other educational institutions in view of the deteriorating air quality in Delhi.

Schools had reopened for all classes from 1 November after being closed for nearly 19 months due to COVID-19.
