Airbnb property owner gets bill of Rs 1.28 lakh after guests kept taps and gas on for 25 days

An Airbnb owner owes a bill of $1,570 (Rs 1.28 lakh) after the couple staying there left the tap on and the gas on. according to a report in Independent, the guests did this as an act of retaliation when they were unable to cancel their bookings. The couple from China traveled to South Korea to punish the hosts and stayed at the property for 25 days. The act resulted in a huge utilities bill for the host, identified by the outlet as Mr. Lee.

The problem arose after the couple booked a villa to stay in Seoul during the trip. But the complex is not located in the city center, but in its suburb. By the time the couple realized this, they had already paid the full amount.

Mr Lee claims the couple didn’t speak to him or Airbnb and did everything on their own. He first contacted the host to ask if the property had any surveillance cameras. When Mr. Lee said there were not, he turned on as many lights, taps, electrical appliances and gas taps as he could. Independent reports,

The host further added that the couple did not stay at the property and instead traveled throughout South Korea. Mr. Li said, he returned only five times in 25 days and spent only five minutes each time.

When the couple checked out, the gas company contacted Mr. Lee and told him about the significant increase in usage. He feared it was a leak.

When Mr Li visited the villa, he found the windows open and the gas on. He received a water and electricity bill of $116 (Rs 9,506), a gas bill of $730 (Rs 59,824) and $728 (Rs 59,660) for “miscellaneous expenses”.

He added that the couple used over 120,000 liters of water during their stay.
