Airport assists woman who suffers cardiac arrest, shortness of breath

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) went an extra mile to assist a family that was facing a mid-air health crisis.

An Air India Express (AIE) aircraft carrying a family of five traveling from Kannur to Sharjah made an emergency landing at MIA on December 3 after a woman suffered a cardiac arrest and breathing problems.

Based on the information received by MIA’s Airport Operation Control Central (AOCC) about this medical emergency at 9.21 a.m. from the Commander of Flight IX-745, the entire MIA emergency system and stakeholders were put on alert.

With a senior MIA official walking to the point, the family, which included the ailing passenger, her three minor children and her husband, were taken to AJ Hospital in Kuntikana, Mangaluru for treatment within 17 minutes of the plane’s stoppage. At 10 am, a doctor attached to the Airport Health Organization (APHO) examined the passenger on board and found him stable.

Senior MIA officials were in constant touch with airline officials, Ground Handling Agency (GHA) staff who took the 33-year-old passenger to the hospital and were treated by doctors. Once the doctors confirmed that the passenger was out of danger and had recovered, a senior MIA official contacted her husband and assured him of all possible assistance for his onward journey to Sharjah, which he later Took in the day

The family later left MIA at 11 pm on flight 6e-1417 for Sharjah and on their arrival at the airport from the hospital, they got priority in clearing the mandatory RT-PCR test and other statutory clearances. A porter was present to take the family to the boarding gate.

A release from the airport on Saturday said that the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), APHO, Customs, Airline, CISF, Immigration and GHA worked together.
