Akhilesh Yadav engages verbally with Deputy CM Maurya in UP Assembly; Adityanath intervened

There was a heated argument between the Samajwadi Party President in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday. Akhilesh Yadav and deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya During the budget session, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had to intervene and he said that unparliamentary words and threats should not be made part of the proceedings as it would set a wrong precedent.

The controversy started when the Leader of Opposition Akhilesh got angry with Maurya’s remarks. Maurya, during his speech in the House, said that Akhilesh Yadav was “praising” the work done in Uttar Pradesh when he was the chief minister. “If their work was good, people would not have cleaned the SP’s mess in the elections,” Maurya said.

On Akhilesh Yadav’s claims of launching various schemes during the SP rule, Maurya said, “Leaders of the opposition do not tire of counting the achievements of their five-year tenure. Which disease do you have? If there is any disease, I would say that you get tested. I would request the Leader of the Opposition to get proper treatment from wherever they want. Get rid of this disease of pasting the sticker of Samajwadi Party on every scheme. You are out of power for five years. Now, out again for five more years. Your number will not come for the next 25 years.”

Maurya, who was speaking after Akhilesh Yadav’s address, said, “Who has built the roads, the expressways, the metro? … it seems that all this has been created by selling your land in Saifai.” Saifai Yadav’s ancestral place is in Etawah district.

Speaking in the Assembly after the dispute between the two leaders, the Chief Minister said, “We can agree or disagree with each other, but we should not use unparliamentary language inside the House.” The decorum of the House should be maintained at all times. He also appealed to the Speaker to dismiss Akhilesh Yadav’s statement during the debate.

Later Akhilesh Yadav also agreed and urged Speaker Satish Mahana to remove any unparliamentary words used by him and said that personal comments should be avoided in the House.

Appealing to Akhilesh Yadav to rein in his anger, Adityanath told him that it was not right on his part to comment and threaten Maurya while speaking.

“A government, whether yours or ours, has a right to talk about its achievements. And the Deputy CM was absolutely right. In addition, he is the Deputy Chief Minister for the second time in a row and is the senior-most leader in the government. You may not agree with him, but you should have at least shown the patience to listen to him. You can always question the government when it is your turn,” Adityanath said.

He said, “I was watching yesterday as well and was shocked to hear that the kind of language used by some members against the finance minister of the state when he stood up to speak. Every member of the House has the right to express his views. Leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties should respect each other.

Stating that consent and dissent are the strengths of democracy, CM Adityanath said, “We do not ask you to agree, nor can I say that I agree with you. Still, I listened to you for a whole hour. I’ll have my say when it’s my turn. We must learn to listen to each other humbly and patiently.”
