Akkad Bakkar Rafoo Chakkar actor remembers late filmmaker Raj Kushal’s unique style

Vicky Arora, who played the male protagonist in the web series Akkad Bakkar Rafoo Chakkar, which was also the last work of late director Raj Kaushal, says the director has a unique way of extracting performances from actors. Incidentally, Kaushal was the husband of the multi-talented Mandira Bedi. The filmmaker died of a heart attack on June 30 this year.

Vicky told IANS, “When I got a call from Raj sir about the show and the character I’m going to play, he told me, ‘Listen, this is the show I’m making and Bhargava’s character’s outline is like this. … .’ In my mind, I was like, ‘Why does he think I’m so boring to play a character like Bhargava? Eventually, when I read the script, I realized how interesting this character is.”

Vicky further added: “Raj sir had a unique style of directing actors. He gave us complete freedom to interpret the characters the way we wanted and not dictate to us how to act in a scene. It gave me the confidence to do my best.”

Fellow actor Shishir Sharma, who also plays a pivotal role, added to what Vicky said, saying: “Yeah, he wasn’t a director who used to say ‘I want it this way’; Instead, he would allow me to act out a scene the way I saw it. If it didn’t match his vision, he corrected it to get what he wanted. In this way the actor-director relationship got stronger.”

He said: “It was not an easy show for us to shoot during the pandemic with so many restrictions in such a short span of time. But we managed to do that, simply because we all dedicated ourselves to Raj’s vision for the show.”

Directed and produced by Raj Kaushal, Akkad Bakkar Rafoo Chakkar is written by Aman Khan. The story revolves around a scandal pulled off by two friends Bhargava Sharma (Vicky) and Siddhant Rastogi (played by Anuj Rampal), who believe that “the good life is just a scam away”.

Recalling the last day of shooting, Shishir said: “Raj walked up to me and whispered in my ear, ‘I think we have a winner in our hands, good ban gaya show.’ I agreed with him, I hugged him, kissed him on the forehead and said, ‘Dhokao release ho jaye, we will party.’ I didn’t know we were meeting for the last time.”

Vicky continued: “I can still see Raj sir giving us that lively smile, with a drink in his hand, telling us, ‘Cheers, guys! Now you all are famous youngster’s, The show turned out good!’ Losing Raj sir is a personal loss.”

Akkad Bakkar Rafoo Chakkar is streaming on Prime Video.
