Alex Davis’s Gulmohar Reminder

This season, you will see his work along with 269 other artists at the ongoing Lokme Tharvadu art show in Alappuzha, Kerala. But sculptor Alex Davies has another pleasant surprise – the gulmohar blossom. Crafted in colored stainless steel under a protective coating, the lines of this sculpture belie the robustness of the medium. 4 Feet Ka Phool was “a response to the blues of the pandemic and the lockdown,” the Delhi-based artist began.

Many know him as a pioneer in turning industrial steel sheets into sculptures. “The random orange-red parks and empty roadsides of these seasonal flowers were really as much a treat to one’s eyes as the soul! These flower-laden trees almost look like they’re on fire. I caught that exact mood.” into a different medium and scale,” he continues.

The flora and fauna have been a source of inspiration for Davis, who believes that his work captures the essence of what he perceives as ‘India Modern’ in the things around him. Nine of his works, which explore the idea of flora, are shown in ‘Merging Metamorphosis’ at the Tao Art Gallery in Mumbai. They are part of two series by him – ‘My Lazy Garden’ and ‘Hyperblooms’ – and include orchids, cactus and heliconia. Some of them are located at a height of nine feet above you. And this collection includes paintings by Rahul Inamdar.

“Her works have a general fluidity and pace that reflect transition. There is also a balanced division in the display, with Inamdar dominating the gallery walls and Davis occupying the physical space,” says curator/gallery owner Sanjana Shah She says. For Davis, next is a series on the Himalayas. “I’m addicted to Himalayas… it should be ready in 2022,” he concludes.

The price of Gulmohar is ₹4,60,000 plus GST. The show is ending on January 9, 2022. @taoartgallery
