Alexander Zverev says ATP needs to give him some opening nights

Alexander Zverev said he had no chance at Sunday’s Madrid Open final because of the way the tournament was organized.

Zverev succumbed to Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz in 62 minutes, but was unhappy that he was last on court in the previous two nights.

On Friday the German finished his quarterfinals after midnight, and on Saturday won after 1:00 pm Madrid time.

“The ATP job this week was absolutely embarrassing,” the world number three player told a news conference.

“Two days ago I went to bed at 4:00, 4:30 yesterday I went to bed at 5:20 am”

“You know, if a normal person goes to bed at 4:00 in the morning one night, at 5:00 the next night, he or she will have a hard time waking up.

“Even if I’m fresh, I probably won’t beat Carlos, but definitely (it) will be a better match,” he added.

Zverev said it was “upsetting” because he also had to play until 5:00 a.m. in Acapulco in February.

“I’m also human. I’m not a robot. I can’t. I just can’t be on my level when it’s happening every night.”

He reiterated his post-match remarks that Alcaraz was “the best player in the world right now”.

“I don’t take anything from Carlos,” he said.

“Ultimately, if you are playing the best player in the world, you have to be on top of yourself. Otherwise, you will have no chance. I didn’t have a chance today.”
