A fierce and strong defender during his playing days, Figueredo has many firsts to his name. He was the first Goan footballer to play for India and the first captain of Goa when the state made its first appearance in the Santosh Trophy in 1964.

“I am saddened by the passing of Menino Figueredo. He was one of the pioneers of Goan football, whose skills and performances attracted national attention. AIFF President Kalyan Choubey said, may God give strength to his family to overcome this difficult time.

AIFF general secretary Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran said: “In the 1960s, India had some great defenders and Figueredo was one of them. His demise has created a void in Indian football.”
