The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to get bigger and more enjoyable this year with the addition of two more teams. All ten franchises will gather in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13 in a mega auction to fight for the best set of players, before returning to India later this year.
A total of 590 players will be auctioned. Of these, 370 are Indian players while 220 are foreign players. Each player is evaluated at the auction table by the franchisee before starting a bidding war. Team owners, strategists and coaches – all come together to find the best player at a reasonable price.
While many people, divided into groups, go after the players and impose price tags, there is only one master who controls the entire event – the auctioneer. That person is specifically responsible for carrying out the auctions in a peaceful manner, calling out several hundred names one after the other patiently but firmly.
So, who is the auctioneer for the 2022 mega auction?
Britain’s Hugh Adams is the man who has been tasked with running the show in Bengaluru this weekend. He was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2018 to replace Richard Madley. Since then, he has been a well-known face in the players’ auctions.
In his career spanning 36 years, Edmeades has conducted over 2500 auctions globally. He is an international fine arts, classic car and charity auctioneer and has sold over 3 million lots for an amount of over £2.7 billion.
Edmeades has experience handling a wide variety of objects, including paintings, fine furniture, ceramics and works of art, and film and sports memorabilia. In 2004, he auctioned off 88 guitars belonging to Eric Clapton, raising a total of $7,438,624. His other unusual highlights include Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB10 from Specter to James Bond for £2,434,500 in 2016.
Admeeds organized the BBC’s Television Celebrity Auctions in 2005 to aid Children in Need, and in 2008 he was the auctioneer at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebration in London. He has also auctioned more than 850 charity fundraisers in 30 cities around the world.
