In this episode, the students who met the dean to register their protest and submit a memorandum alleged that the Urdu department officials not only left out Pandit Malviya’s image in their posters but also used a picture of Allama Iqbal. Demanding action in this episode, the students said that both the acts are unacceptable.
Following an uproar on social media, the poster was removed from the Facebook page and the Urdu department apologized. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts also constituted a committee to look into the matter.
Urdu Department officials changed the poster on their Facebook page and tweeted, “Urdu Department, Faculty of Arts, #BHU, is organizing a webinar as per the description given in the poster. Sincere apologies for the inadvertent mistake in the earlier poster that went viral on social media.”
BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said, “The Urdu Department of the Faculty of Arts (BHU) had organized a webinar on the role of Allama Iqbal in the development of Urdu on the occasion of Urdu Day on Tuesday. The department posted the poster of the webinar on its Facebook page on Monday. When the issue was brought to the attention of the Urdu department officials, they removed the poster late Sunday evening.
“The poster was replaced with another poster which had the image of the BHU founder. The head of the Urdu department expressed his apology in writing,” Singh said, adding that the dean of the faculty also tweeted the new poster with an apology and formed a committee to look into the matter.
A group of BHU students, including researchers Vivek Kumar, Gunjesh Gautam, Divyamani Dwivedi and Patanjali Pandey, met the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at his office on Tuesday and raised serious objections to the matter. Making serious allegations against the officials of the Urdu department, he had demanded action against them.
