Alleged irregularities in giving certificate by CU faculty

Kozhikode

Students graduating in Mass Communication and Journalism from Calicut University are being given their certificates by the Faculty of Humanities and not by the Faculty of Journalism.

The University’s Undergraduate Board of Studies (Journalism) has reportedly decided to bring this to the notice of the university authorities. The issue was highlighted by Syndicate member P. Rasheed Ahmed during the recent Academic Council meeting. However, he claimed that the university authorities did not have a proper answer.

In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Ahmed said that the Faculty of Journalism was established in 1978. Those who passed the BA in Mass Communication were given degree certificates by the Faculty of Humanities since then. “Issuance of certificates by another faculty to the students of a particular faculty is a strange practice, which can seriously affect the future of the students who complete the programme,” said Mr. Ahmed.

He urged the Vice-Chancellor to ensure that the graduate students get their certificates from the Faculty of Journalism. Incorrectly issued certificates should be corrected. A detailed investigation needs to be done into the circumstances that led to such a practice and why it was still in vogue. Mr Ahmed also demanded action against those responsible for this.

However, senior university officials said it was not clear whether the practice would affect the job prospects of the students.
