Mumbai: Government-owned Alliance Air said that it has started flight services to Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport From Keshod in Junagadh district Gujarat Under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme UDAN, an official release said.
Inaugural flight on new route flagged off by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia from Keshod airport, which is near Gir, the abode of Asiatic lions, on Saturday, it said.
Currently, it takes around 16 hours to travel by road from Keshod to Mumbai, but with the introduction of air services between the two destinations, the travel time will be reduced to just one hour and 25 minutes, according to the release.
“In the airline’s summer schedule this year, Ahmedabad has been linked to three cities- Amritsar, Agra and Ranchi. Similarly, Porbandar and Rajkot have been linked to Mumbai. Apart from starting the new UDAN route from today, we will also connect Keshod with Ahmedabad.
He said that two new greenfield airports are also to be constructed at Hirasar and Dholera which will have a capacity to handle 23 lakh and 30 lakh passengers respectively with budget allocation of Rs 1,405 crore and Rs 1,305 crore respectively.
A special route connecting Porbandar and Delhi will start from April 27, the minister informed.
Owned by the Airports Authority of India, Keshod Airport was initially refurbished and revived in the late 1980s to facilitate scheduled operations, the release said, adding that for the past 21 years, the airport had Commercial flight operations were not being conducted.

The route was granted to Alliance Air under the 4.1 version of the plan and with the opening of this new route, a total of 417 routes have been operated under the initiative.
According to the release, the airline will operate thrice a week flights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and will deploy its seven-seater ATR 72-600 aircraft.
With this, Alliance Air has become the first airline to connect Keshod with Mumbai under the UDAN scheme.
The new UDAN UDAN route will bring the tourist destination Keshod on the national air map and provide convenience and comfort to the travelers of the region, the release said.
