Vadodara: It was 16 year old professional badminton Afia Lokhandwala Smashing and dropping the shuttlecock was played in a tournament in the city on Sunday. And, his skills not only stunned his opponents but also helped him bag the Player of the Tournament award.
“I am very excited. I never thought that I would play badminton in a professional tournament and win an award. Taking this sport seriously and pursuing it professionally has been a real inspiration for me,” said Ajwa Road. A smiling Afia resident said.
Afia is among those 56 women Alvi Bohra Community Who participated in the Alvi women’s badminton tournament organized by Baroda Cyclopedians. And most women were playing the sport professionally for the first time.
“This is the first time in our community that we have organized a badminton tournament for women only. The idea was to involve him in a sport, motivate him to play and also work on his fitness,” said Dr Zulqarnain BhaisahebHead of Baroda Cyclopedians.
“Improving the health of our women and involving them in mainstream sports was one of the main reasons behind organizing this tournament. We want women from our community to take up different sports and play professionally,” Bhaisaheb told TOI. The tournament was organized under the guidance of Sayyidna Hatim Zakiuddin Saheb Tus – the 45th Spiritual Head. Alvi Bohra Community.
The competition was organized on Sunday at the Waghodia Sports Complex in the city. Although it was a one-day event, some women practiced badminton for almost two months.
“I used to practice sports with my father every night. After completing 12th standard, I will play badminton professionally.” aafia Insisted. “I practiced badminton for three weeks and played in tournaments. But I never thought I would play well. This tournament has given me a lot of confidence and has also improved my fitness. Such initiatives work very well for the women of our community,” said Dilnaz Rangwala, an entrepreneur.
Bhaisaheb said that the Alawi Bohra community would organize many more sports tournaments for women only in the coming months.
