Alzheimer’s disease linked to a person’s personality traits: Study

Researchers in Florida, US, have revealed that changes in brain chemistry caused by Alzheimer’s disease can be seen in people with personality characteristics associated with the condition.

New findings suggest that a person’s personality may provide protection against life-changing mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s and other neurological problems by limiting the development of neuropathology. It occurs mainly in personalities with low neuroticism and strong conscientiousness.

The exponential growth in the technology of brain scanning helped researchers to investigate tau neuropathology and in vivo amyloid and successfully conclude the study. The state-of-the-art latest technologies have also helped to identify the presence of disease while people are still leading a healthy life without any signs or symptoms.

The study involved examining two personality characteristics associated with dementia disease. Researchers documenting the study analyzed the flurry of negative emotions. The study’s findings can be accessed through an article published online in collaboration with Florida State University’s research repository as well as Biological Psychiatry.

It includes insightful data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) as well as a meta-analysis of previous studies that is a consolidation of twelve studies on Alzheimer’s disease and personality.

The comprehensive study involved more than 3,000 participants and combined the findings of various other research in this regard in the past. It gives a comprehensive account of the relationship between neuropathology and personality.

The group of researchers also observed that the association between personality and neuropathology multiplies in cognitively healthy individuals.

Previous research in this regard indicates that low neuroticism is helpful in coping with stress and also reduces the chances of mental disorders. On the other hand, higher conscientiousness has been linked to increased physical activity and a disease-free lifestyle.
