Amazon India on November 30 launched two wind-solar hybrid projects of 300 megawatt (MW) capacity each in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka in India, which once commissioned will generate 1,163 gigawatt hours of clean electricity, the company said in a statement. .

With three solar farms in Rajasthan, Amazon now has five utility-scale renewable energy projects in India, or about 720MW of renewable energy capacity. Wind-solar hybrids are sites with both wind- and solar-farms that enable a more consistent supply of clean energy to the electricity grid.

Projects were launched with Vibrant Energy, a subsidiary of financial services company Macquarie, a portfolio company of Green Investment Group (GIG).

“As the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy globally, we continue to build momentum for our renewable energy investments in India. Has worked with government and industry stakeholders in India to unlock more corporate renewable energy purchases globally and in the country with 100% renewable energy by 2025. This year, we have reached 720MW of renewable energy capacity through utility-scale projects in India.

The new projects are aligned with the wind-solar hybrid policy of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), which aims to enable more such hybrid projects to use transmission infrastructure and land efficiently, and reduce variability in renewable generation. thereby improving grid stability.

Amazon India has said that it will make its business carbon-neutral, generating energy from renewable energy sources to balance it from energy consumed from fossil fuel sources by 2040. In 2021, Amazon plans to reach 85% renewable energy in its business. In Asia, Amazon has now invested in 17 utility-scale renewable energy projects with a total capacity of more than 1,600 MW in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore.
