Ambassador car ready to return! Hindustan Motors confirms development – Times of India

The Ambassador is all set to return in a new avatar in the coming two years. Hindustan Motor Financial Corporation of India (HMFCI), a subsidiary of the CK Birla Group, will present the Ambassador with a new engine and design. According to Reuters, the new Ambassador will be manufactured at Hindustan Motors’ Chennai facility. Hindustan Motors And Peugeot Working on the engine and design of the new ‘Ambee’ to be launched in 2024.
Hindustan Motors director Uttam Bose on Wednesday confirmed that work is underway to bring out the ‘new look’ Amby. In addition, he said, “the mechanical and design work for the new engine has reached an advanced stage.”
Earlier, the Chennai plant used to produce Mitsubishi cars, while the Uttarpara site manufactured ambassadors. The previous ambassador was made in September 2014 at the Uttarpara facility. Due to low demand and heavy debt, the carmaker halted production in 2014.
Subsequently, French carmaker Peugeot acquired the rights to the Ambassador brand in 2017 for Rs 80 crore. Now the carmaker is planning to relaunch the Ambassador car and will manufacture it at HM’s Chennai manufacturing facility.
From the 1960s to the mid-90s, ambassadors were a status symbol in India. At that time, the Ambassador was the only luxury car in the Indian market. However, production of the popular car came to a halt in the year 2014 as its annual sales saw a major drop from 20,000 units in the mid-1980s to only 2,000 units.
