Amit Shah demands CBI probe into ‘political murder’ of BJP worker in Bengal, meets victim’s family

Demanding a CBI probe into the death of BJYM activist Arjun Chaurasia in Kolkata’s Kashipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said a culture of violence and a fear psychosis prevails in Bengal.

Shah, who is on a two-day visit to the state, visited Chaurasia’s house when news broke that the employee was found hanging in an abandoned building in the area under mysterious circumstances.

The BJP leader, who clashed with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the election campaign for the state assembly last year, said the BJP would demand the harshest punishment from the court for the crime.

“Yesterday TMC celebrated one year of its third term and now we have the Chaurasia murder case,” the home minister told reporters after meeting the worker’s family members. He also said that the Union Home Ministry is taking the death of Chaurasia seriously and has sought a report on it.

Tension prevailed in Kosipore on Friday when police officials faced opposition from BJP workers as they tried to take away the body. Later, a large police contingent was sent to the spot to control the situation and the body was taken to RG Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

The BJP has alleged that Chaurasia was murdered by the ruling TMC, which has denied the allegation. “He was an efficient party worker. We found him dead in the morning,” said state BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya.

Another senior BJP leader said Shah was upset after hearing the news. “They asked us to cancel our grand reception at the NSC Bose airport,” he said.

Senior Bengal BJP leader Rahul Sinha said the man was killed on the orders of top Trinamool leaders because of Shah’s visit. “Our worker Arjun Chaurasia was murdered and hanged in the same Trinamool-style as Home Minister Amit Shah’s programs are scheduled today. Not only the lower level TMC leaders are involved in this incident but the top leadership is also involved.”

Refuting the BJP’s allegation, TMC MP Shantanu Sen said: “The allegations against us are baseless. Let the police investigate the matter.”

Atin Ghosh, a local Trinamool MLA, said the allegations were leveled by “outsiders from the BJP”. “How can you decide what has happened before the post-mortem? Why call only Amit Shah? Call the Prime Minister. The BJP is making baseless allegations for political gains,” Ghosh said.

The family of the deceased alleged that they have been receiving threats ever since the TMC returned to power in May 2021 after the assembly elections. Police said that no suicide note was found from the spot.
