Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will communicate with him on the BJP’s central leadership’s decision regarding expansion or reshuffle of the state cabinet. Shah was in the city on Tuesday, during which he attended various events, and attended lunch at Bommai’s official residence, where he was accompanied by select BJP leaders from the state.
To a question on what Shah told him about Bommai’s cabinet expansion or reshuffle, Bommai said, “He (Shah) said, he will talk to (me) after going to Delhi.” When asked about speculations about the cabinet reshuffle and deputy chief minister, he said, “This is something that I am coming to know from you (media). Shah’s visit to the city comes amid pressure from a possible change in leadership and cabinet reshuffle or expansion ahead of the 2023 assembly elections.
Several top BJP leaders have rubbished speculations that Bommai will be replaced. According to top BJP sources, Shah also asked Bommai to focus on development and election preparations and leave the rest to the party leadership.
Amid rumblings in BJP circles that top-to-bottom changes in the cabinet cannot be ruled out, the ministerial candidates are hopeful that a decision on cabinet expansion or reshuffle is likely to be taken soon. Between that many positions can make way for new faces. Meanwhile, the state cabinet meeting scheduled for May 5 has been postponed till May 11.
This has given rise to speculations that the postponement may be to accommodate expansion or reshuffle in the state cabinet, amid reports that the BJP high command is expected to take a decision in this regard before May 10. Bommai is under pressure from candidates to expand or reshuffle his cabinet at the earliest before next year’s elections.
Five posts are currently vacant in the state cabinet, which has 29 ministers, including the chief minister, against a sanctioned strength of 34. Some legislators are advocating for a Gujarat-like overhaul of the Karnataka cabinet soon, to make way for a new one. faces before assembly elections
