Andhra Pradesh: Death toll due to rain rises to 33. reached

The death toll due to rains in Andhra Pradesh rose to 33 as more bodies were pulled out by flood streams, with at least 12 people reported missing. Meanwhile, fresh floods are looming over the temple-town Tirupati as a crack has started developing in the Rayalacheruvu lake.

According to government data, the death toll due to rain and floods was 20 in Kadapa, seven in Anantapuramu, four in Chittoor and two in SPS Nellore. The body of an unidentified person was found near Somasila reservoir in Nellore district.

100 trains canceled

The Chennai-Kolkata National Highway-16 was cut off for traffic between Nellore and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh as the Chennai Grand Trunk railroad sever all the important links between the southern and eastern and northern parts of the country. According to South Central Railway, over 100 express trains were canceled and 29 others were diverted due to damage to railway tracks near Nellore.

The Chennai-Mumbai rail route passing through Cuddapah district also remained closed as tracks were washed away near Nandaluru.

As the floods wreaked havoc, the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway-16 had to be closed for traffic following a massive breach at Padugupadu in SPS Nellore district. The State Disaster Management Authority said that over two lakh cusecs of flood water flowed out of Somsila reservoir in SPS Nellore district, causing the floods.

This caused a rift at another place, Kovuru and NH-16 road. As a result, traffic on NH-16 between Nellore and Vijayawada was suspended, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for kilometers on either side.

Fresh flood fears in Tirupati

Meanwhile, fears of a fresh flood saw the temple-town Tirupati and surrounding villages begin to develop as a rift in the Rayalacheruvu lake. Chittoor district authorities have directed people living in 20 villages to immediately move to safer places.

PS Pradyuman, a senior IAS officer deputed to Chittoor district to oversee the flood relief operations, told reporters: “The situation is critical, so we have cautioned people to go to rehabilitation camps. While the tank’s capacity is just 0.2 tmc feet, Now it is 0.9 TMC full of ft.” He said that every effort is being made to prevent the violation and avoid any major disaster.

In all, the government said 2,007 houses were damaged in the four flood-hit districts, with the maximum number of 911 in Chittoor causing damage. 5.18 crores. The state government ordered free distribution of 25 kg rice, one kg red gram dal, one liter edible oil, one kg potato and onion to the flood-affected families.
