‘Self-reliant India’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision was a great source of inspiration and will go a long way in strengthening the Indian Armed Forces, said Ramineni Ramachandra Rao, Managing Director, Bengaluru-based Merlinhawk Aerospace.

The Military and Civil Design Organization has been awarded the Raksha Srijan Ratna-2021-22 as part of the Defense Minister’s Award for Excellence under the category of Indigenization/Import Substitution.

Mr Rao received the award from Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday at the DefExpo-22 to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 to 22.

A native of Vijayawada, Sri Rao did his schooling and college here. Established 35 years ago, his company Merlinhawk is working towards indigenization of various aerial systems and ground support equipment for the Indian Armed Forces. “Our equipment is currently flying on various helicopters like ALH, LCH, LUH, Mi 17 and Cheetah/Chetak,” he said. From Arunachal to Rajasthan, he said, “We are also exporting some of these equipment to Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries.”

Merlinhawk is one of 20 companies selected from 200 participating in this year’s event. It has recently set up a manufacturing facility to meet the growing needs of the defense sector.
