Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ch. Venu Gopal Krishna on Wednesday said Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had given approval for the proposed modernization of canals in the Godavari delta and strengthening of floodplains.

The detailed project report on the proposal was submitted to the Chief Minister by the Water Resources Department on Tuesday.

Addressing the media here, Shri Venu Gopal Krishna said that the officers of the Water Resources Department have been directed by the Chief Minister to prepare the technical estimates.

“This initiative is the need of the hour. We need to intensify our preparedness to face the flash floods of magnitude higher than the current record,” he said.

“Strengthening the floodplains will face an influx of more than 30 lakh cusecs. This month 28 lakh cusecs was recorded at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Doleswaram,” the minister said.
