Andrew McDonald has been appointed the head coach of the Australian men’s cricket team on a four-year contract.

Cricket Australia said on Wednesday that McDonald’s contract was made permanent after serving as interim coach after Justin Langer did not agree to a short-term contract renewal in February.

“The journey so far has been particularly enjoyable, and I am honored to be given this incredible opportunity for an exciting period ahead,” said McDonald, who won Australia’s 1–0 Test series. The latter were preferred to secure full-time jobs. Pakistan.

McDonald joined Australia’s coaching team after winning all three domestic competition titles during the 2018–19 season, leading Victoria State and Melbourne Renegades in 2019.

The former Test all-rounder has also held head coaching roles in the Indian Premier League and English county cricket. He was the senior assistant coach with Langer since joining the Australian team.

McDonald, who returned from a three-Test tour of Pakistan last week, also suffered a 2-1 loss to Australia in the one-day series and went on to win the lone T20I.

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said: “We interviewed a number of outstanding candidates for the role, which is one of the most important in Australian sport.”

“Andrew has already shown he is an excellent head coach and the approach he presented for the role during the hiring process was both impressive and exciting, making him our clear choice.”
