Anglo American unveils world’s largest hydrogen fuel cell mining truck

The British mining company has unveiled a prototype heavy mining truck capable of carrying up to 290 tonnes of payload.

British mining company Anglo American has revealed a hydrogen fuel cell powered truck it plans to use in its mining operations. The giant truck uses multiple hydrogen fuel cells capable of developing up to 800kW (1,073 bhp) which can provide a total of 2 MW (2,000 kW or 2,682 bhp) of power with a 1.2 MWh battery pack. The truck weighs 220 tonnes and can carry up to 290 tonnes of payload.

The prototype has been developed as a pilot project to test the viability of the powertrain with the aim of transferring most of the company’s mining trucks to the new powertrain system. The prototype began life as a diesel-powered model before being retrofitted with a 2 MW powertrain in partnership with First Mode. The truck also uses regenerative braking to charge the batteries – a useful system given that most hauling trucks require repeated modulation of the downward brake.

The diesel truck was converted to run on a hydrogen fuel cell and 1.2 MW battery pack.

Speaking on the prototype, Anglo American Chief Executive, Duncan VanBlad, said: “NuGen is a solid demonstration of our FutureSmart mining program that is changing the future of our industry. Our total Scope 1 emissions from our truck fleet combined with diesel emissions. c.10-15% of the total, it is an important step on our path to carbon-neutral operations by 2040.

nuGen Anglo American plans to develop a green hydrogen environment for on-site production of fuel to fuel its trucks at its mining operations. The mining truck will be operated in an open cast mine in South Africa.

“Over the next several years, we envisage to replace or replace our current fleet of diesel-powered trucks with this zero-emissions haulage system, which is loaded with green hydrogen. If this pilot is successful, we can remove up to 80% of diesel emissions in our open mines by applying this technology to our global fleet,” Vanblad said.

The company didn’t reveal exact details of the hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, other than revealing that it uses multiple hydrogen fuel cells and electric motors and battery pack capacity.
