Antakshari movie review: A musical play with a serial killer that falls flat

The chances of encountering a police officer who will prompt suspects to play a game of antakshari are almost nil to find a psycho killer who will prompt his victim to play a game of music. in antakshariWe both meet.

But then, initially, we are struck by the novelty and wit in Circle Inspector Das’ (Saiju Kurup) interactions with the suspects, which are built around Antakshari, a game in which songs starting with the last letter of one The song is included. Sung by the previous player.

The fun doesn’t last though. Soon, Das receives an anonymous call challenging him to play the same game, failing which his daughter’s life will be in danger. He refuses and his daughter is drawn to death at the hands of a masked man with a song on his lips. Das and a young officer (Sudhi Koppa) begin an investigation into past cases where the killer used similar methods to strangle victims.

The killer’s path is dotted with so many red herrings and parallel tracks that the screenwriter forgets to even close some of them at the end. The clinic where Das’s wife Chitra (Priyanka Nair) works has a doctor (Kannan Nair). She is a pervert and has things lying in her office that could link her to crimes, yet we clearly know this is just an attempt to mislead us, given the way these sequences are written and staged. Is. Similar is the case with the part involving a local politician (Vijay Babu), who is also portrayed as a potential suspect.

side Story

Another twist comes in the form of a side story next to a budding musician, his abusive stepfather and a mysterious girl. Later in the film an attempt is made to link this story to the central narrative, but it appears to be fictional. What works for the film for a good part is that it manages to keep the suspense alive, but the slow and effective build-up is doomed in the end, coming to a twisted and disjointed conclusion.

It may sound like a good thing when mental health becomes a topic of discussion, but the random fixation of the killer that leads to a series of murders seems too far-fetched to make us shudder. Caste discrimination is also an aspect that comes up in many places, in the story of the past and within the police force.

innovation factor antakshari wears out quickly, even if the disjointed climax strips the shine from the meticulous construction.
