Anti-doing unit to monitor beaches

The Greater Chennai Police on Thursday launched an anti-doing unit to save people from drowning.

The unit will operate at five locations- Marina, Ennore, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and Palavakkam.

According to a press release, the anti-doing unit comprises personnel from the city police, beach patrol teams, fire and rescue services, fishermen and sportspersons. It will have boats, vehicles, protective gear and first aid kits to prevent drowning of any casualties.

Also, awareness will be created about not going into the sea through loudspeakers installed on all the beaches.

More than 500 deaths due to drowning were recorded in the last five years in five beaches covering 13 police stations, the release said.

The launch event was attended by DGP C. Silendra Babu and Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal. Rescue measures were performed.
