The new action came a day after the South Corporation launched a campaign to remove illegal temporary structures and demolish some brick walls in New Friends Colony. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation had also launched an anti-encroachment drive in the Mangolpuri area.
On Wednesday, civic officials carried out a round of planned anti-encroachment drive in Najafgarh and western areas of SDMC, removing illegally erected temporary structures at various places including Dwarka, Chaukhandi and adjoining areas.
Videos of protests and actions taken by a section of local residents were being circulated on social media. In one instance, a man in Janakpuri area protested strongly and said, “We should have been given notice,” as can be seen in a video.
“They (anti-encroachment team) will have to pass over our bodies,” he said, adding that a group of men and some police personnel were standing next to them.
SDMC western zone president Shweta Saini said that anti-encroachment drive is also being conducted in Janakpuri and Chaukhandi near Tilak Nagar. He said some local people protested in Janakpuri against the campaign.
“Despite protests, an anti-encroachment drive was carried out. We have only removed illegal temporary structures and kiosks. It is our duty to remove encroachments and we will continue to take action against violators,” Saini told PTI.
Meanwhile, various Left organizations took out a citizen’s march to Delhi’s Lt Governor’s residence to protest against the anti-encroachment campaigns being carried out by the BJP-led municipal corporations in the city.
The march started from Kashmere Gate and was progressing towards Baijal’s residence when the police stopped him.
Officials said that under the scheme, action is being taken in all the four zones of the corporation.
Action was taken from Akash Hospital in Najafgarh zone to Madhu Vihar Bus Terminal and other adjoining areas in Ward No. 51S, while in West Zone, action was taken in Ward No. 6S in Chaukhandi and surrounding areas. As per information shared by a senior civic official.
The official said that police personnel have also reached the areas of the south zone, while action has started in the central zone as well.
The areas in the central zone where the action has been initiated include Mehr Chand Market, Lodhi Colony, places near Sai Baba Mandir and JLN Metro station and adjoining areas. 58S, officials said.
In South Zone, action has been started in Ward No. 1 near Arjan Garh Metro Station, Aya Nagar Village Road, Ghitorni Village and adjoining areas. 73S.
Officials said demolition action is likely in the South Zone, West Zone and Najafgarh Zone.
Meanwhile, a senior official said that “a tree was unintentionally uprooted” during the SDMC’s anti-encroachment drive in New Friends Colony on Tuesday.
Information in this regard was given to the Deputy Conservator of Forests through a letter on May 10, in which the SDMC has assured the “Forest Department to do ‘compensatory afforestation of 10 trees’ in lieu of the uprooted tree or to take measures as directed. Forest Department ,” the civic body said.
According to SDMC officials, during the campaign in New Friends Colony on Tuesday, a two kilometer road was made free from encroachment. After protests by local people and political leaders, the SDMC had to return to Shaheen Bagh on Monday without taking similar action.
