acclaimed actor Anupam Kher Has said that ‘The Kashmir Files’ is not just a film for him, but “an emotion that I have portrayed on screen”. He was speaking at the ‘Table Talks’ event at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here on Wednesday.
“I represent people who were evicted from their homes, so I consider it a great responsibility to express this in the best possible way,” Kher said with emotion. “My tears, my troubles, what you see in the film are all real.”
Kher said the Vivek Agnihotri film enabled people around the world to become aware of the tragedy of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley in the 1990s.
“This is a film based on true events. Vivek Agnihotri interviewed around 500 people from across the world for the film. On the night of January 19, 1990, around half a million Kashmiri Pandits had to leave their homes and memories in the valley after the uprising ” violence,” Kher said.
“As a Kashmiri Hindu, I have lived with the tragedy,” Kher continued. “But nobody was recognizing the tragedy. The world was trying to hide the tragedy. The film started a healing process by documenting the tragedy.”
Talking about the advent of OTT platforms, Kher said that the audience is now used to watching world cinema and multilingual films.
Kher said, “The audience got a taste of realistic films. Films which have an element of reality will definitely connect with the audience.”

He said, “The success of films like ‘The Kashmir Files’ is a testimony to this. Without any songs, without any comedy, the film turned out to be amazing. It is indeed a triumph of cinema.”
