AP: 3 killed, several injured during a public meeting organized by N Chandrababu Naidu

Three people were killed and several others injured during a public meeting organized by TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu at Guntur in Guntur district, as reported by news agency ANI quoting Guntur SP Arif Hafeez.

Earlier, eight people were killed in a stampede during an event organized by the TDP in Kandukur town of Nellore district. The victims, including two women, died and eight others were injured when they fell into a canal when Leader of the Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu was addressing a roadshow on Wednesday. On the basis of preliminary information, he said that a large number of people had gathered at the venue and during the meeting there was some scuffle between the people, which led to a stampede-like situation in the canal. Some of the injured are being treated in the hospital. Naidu, who immediately canceled the meeting, announced 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.

He also visited the hospital where the injured are undergoing treatment. He also asked TDP leaders to ensure better treatment to the injured. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the incident saying that he is pained by the accident and announced 2 lakh as ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased and 50,000 to the injured. “Anguished by the accident at a public meeting in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Ex-gratia. 2 lakh each from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured 50,000,” PMO India said in a tweet.
