A day after the Jahangirpuri violence in the national capital, the BJP on Sunday said the “ideology of appeasement” adopted in the last 70 years is responsible for communal riots across the country. In a statement expressing deep concern over the recent incidents of hate speech and communal violence targeting opposition leaders including Sonia Gandhi on their joint issue, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that this selective politics of the opposition is harmful to the country. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, Patra said the investigation into the clashes in north-west Delhi area is underway and everyone should wait for the result.
“But, at the same time, we would like to say that Sonia Gandhi along with other opposition leaders issued a joint statement yesterday. This selective politics of some opposition leaders is not proper for the country, it is harmful for the country. There is an ideology for the last seventy years, and its name is the ideology of appeasement,” Patra said, adding that “this policy and politics of appeasement” is very unfortunate.
A clash broke out between Hindus and Muslims during a religious procession in Jahangirpuri on Saturday, in which nine people, including eight police personnel and a civilian, were injured.
