Apple buys startup that makes music with artificial intelligence

Apple Inc. acquired a startup called AI Music, which uses artificial intelligence to create tailor-made music, including technology that can be used in its slate of audio offerings, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. could.

The purchase of AI Music, a London-based business founded in 2016, was completed in recent weeks. Before the deal, the company had about two dozen employees.

The technology developed by AI Music can create royalty-free music and soundtracks using artificial intelligence, according to a copy of its now-defunct website. The idea is to generate dynamic soundtracks that change based on user interaction. For example, the song in a video game may change according to the mood, or the music during a workout may adapt to the intensity of the user.

On its LinkedIn page, AI Music stated that its goal is to “give consumers the power to choose the music they want, seamlessly edited to meet their needs, or create dynamic solutions that serve their audiences.” Adaptable to fit.” The startup previously had deals with advertising companies to create more engaging ads that played different music based on audience.

A representative for Apple based in Cupertino, Calif., declined to comment.

While relatively small, the deal is one of the tech giant’s few acquisitions in the past year. Apple’s last reported purchase was also for a music company: Primephonic. That startup ran a classical music streaming service, which Apple intends to turn this year into an Apple Music-related app.

According to a filing in October, Apple dramatically slowed its acquisition spending during 2021, devoting just $33 million to paying down payments in the fiscal year. This is down from $1.5 billion in 2020 and $624 million in 2019.
