Apple may be ‘unhappy’ with this latest iPhone gadget from BMW

Apple has already warned iPhone users and accessory makers that attaching iPhones to motorbikes could be a bad idea because it could damage the camera system. Apple previously stated in a support document, “Exposing your iPhone to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges, particularly those generated by high-power motorcycle engines, may impair camera system performance.”

Despite this caveat, BMW Motorrad has launched a new smartphone mount called the ConnectedRide Cradle to help people connect their smartphones to bikes while riding. Of course, this new BMW accessory also supports Android smartphones, but BMW disagrees with Apple’s explicit warning about how vibrations from a motorcycle engine can affect iPhones. As far as Android phones are concerned, there has been no formal communication from any of the major brands about using the smartphone mount.

The ConnectedRide cradle not only serves as a simple cradle to comfortably use the smartphone as a satnav while riding. In addition navigation maps and vehicle data such as lean angle, acceleration, deceleration and much more can be displayed using the multi-controller via the BMW Motorrad Connected app.

The ConnectedRide cradle is suitable for many different smartphone sizes and charges the smartphone with a maximum of 7.5 W according to the Qi standard or wired with a maximum of 7.5 W (1.5 A at 5 V) via a USB-C connection . An LED charging indicator (can be turned off) provides information about the phone’s charging status.

To Apple’s warning, “High-power or high-volume motorcycle engines generate intense high-amplitude vibrations, which are transmitted through the chassis and handlebars. Use your iPhone for motorcycles with high-power or high-volume engines.” are not recommended because they are caused by the amplitude of vibrations in certain frequency ranges.”

Apple also said, “Connecting your iPhone to vehicles with small volumes or electric engines, such as mopeds and scooters, may result in comparatively low-amplitude vibrations, but if you do so there is a need to reduce the risk of damage.” A vibration damping mount is recommended for your iPhone and its OIS and AF system. It is also recommended to avoid regular use for long periods of time to further reduce the risk of damage.”
