Apple suspends gambling ads after developer shouts

According to a statement from spokesman Trevor Kincaid, Apple has “stopped gambling ads and certain other categories on App Store product pages” after developers and commentators criticized the types of ads shown in the iPhone’s App Store.

on Tuesday, Apple announced that companies can advertise their apps on store pages for other apps, putting their icons in the ‘You May Also Like’ section. Almost immediately, developers began showing examples of ads for gambling apps being recommended within their apps.

Interestingly, Twitter is full of screenshots of very inappropriate ad placements. A Twitter user shows an advertisement of a slot machine app with gambling addiction recovery apps, and several examples of other gambling addiction recovery apps, and examples of other betting apps being advertised on the pages of adult video chat apps, apps aimed at children. Going is appearing on the Apple Books page, and dating apps are being placed under Apps designed to improve existing relationships.

According to MacRumors reporter Joe Rossignol, Apple hasn’t clarified how long the pause will last, or if it will make any policy changes based on how the initial rollout has gone down. It is also not clear which other ad categories have been stopped.

Specifically, for advertising on Apple’s rules app Store List apps related to gambling, dating, alcohol, and the drug and medical industry as ‘restricted’, which means there are special rules about where they can be shown. Limitations are primarily about laws rather than what is palatable or potentially harmful. Although; The site says gambling apps are “banned or limited in certain countries and territories,” but says nothing about the audience they can be served to.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajiv Chandrashekhar said he has spoken to Apple about reports of stores in Delhi running out of stock for the firm’s latest phone, the iPhone 14 Pro.

The minister also said that the demand for iPhone 14 Pro has increased and that Apple is removing supply constraints. “Private selling is probably an “alternative” supply channel,” Chandrasekhar said.
