Apple to shift AirPods, beat headphone production in India: Report

Apple is reportedly gearing up to make AirPods and Beats headphones in India, as the tech giant doubles down on assembling new iPhones in the country.

Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday that Apple has asked its suppliers to move some AirPods and Beats headphone production India for the first time.

iPhone assembler Foxconn is gearing up to manufacture Beats headphones in the country, and plans to produce AirPods there as well, as mentioned in the report.

“The move is part of Apple’s gradual diversification from China, as it reduces the risk of supply chain disruptions stemming from the country’s strict zero-Covid policy and tensions with the US,” it added.

AirPods are second only to the iPhone in terms of shipment volume for Apple.

Currently, AirPods are being manufactured in Vietnam and China, with the majority of Beats headphones being produced in Vietnam. The ‘Make in India’ iPhone 14 will also be shipped to Europe soon.

Considering India’s emphasis on local manufacturing, Apple has started production of the new iPhone 14 in India, a first for the tech giant as it eases the manufacturing period of new iPhones in India with China, which that it has a major global manufacturing center. ,

The locally assembled iPhone 14 will go on sale in the country in the fourth quarter, as the company spends billions of dollars to strengthen its local manufacturing/assembly plans.

At this pace, industry analysts predict that next year, Apple may manufacture the iPhone 15 in China at the same time as in India.

According to an analysis by JP Morgan, as local manufacturing of technology products in India slows down, Apple is likely to shift 5 per cent of its new iPhone 14 production to India by the end of this year and 25 per cent by 2025.

Buoyed by ease of doing business and friendly local manufacturing policies, Apple’s ‘Make in India’ iPhones will likely account for about 85 per cent of its total iPhone production for the country this year.
