Armed man arrested outside UN headquarters after standoff

A UN spokesman told AFP: “UN Headquarters is closed, there is police activity.”

United Nations, United States of America:

New York police on Thursday arrested a man holding a firearm outside the United Nations headquarters after a tense standoff in which streets around the venue were closed.

According to a UN official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the man had threatened to kill himself in front of the main entrance of the building.

Images showed armed police surrounding him as he walked up and down the sidewalk holding a gun for more than two hours.

A spokesman for the NYPD said, “We have a male in custody in connection with this incident.”

The United Nations had previously told staff that the area was protected by police and that “no UN staff or allies are in danger.”

UN meetings were not interrupted as the police held talks with the man before his arrest.
