Ashes: England fined 5 WTC points for slow over rate in Gabba defeat, fined 100% match fee

Nothing is going right for Joe Root in Australia and England as the visitors were docked 5 World Test Championship points for slow over-rate in their first Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. England managed to score 0 points from the Ashes opener 9-wicket loss after batting collapse Saturday morning.

England were also fined 100 per cent of their match fees for failing to complete the stipulated overs during the first Ashes Test.

England has slipped from 7th place in the 8-team World Test Championship 2021-23 table with just 9 points from 5 matches. Joe Root’s men were 1-2 at home in the 5-Test series against India, in which they also got 2 points.

“In accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship’s Conditions of Play, a team is awarded one point for each over,” the ICC said in a statement.

“Match referee David Boone has penalized England 100% of their match fee for falling five overs short of the target after adjusting for time allowances. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel from Players of Their Match Charges 20%. The fee for every over of the team gets reduced.”

Travis Head fined for using audible obscenity

Meanwhile, Australia, who opened the WTC tally to 12 points after a dominant win over England, saw their hero of the Gabba Test, Travis Head, fined 15 per cent of his match fee for the use of audible obscenities.

The incident happened in the 77th over of Australia’s first innings, when Head used inappropriate language after being beaten by Ben Stokes. There was no formal hearing after Southeastern pleaded guilty and accepted sanctions.
